Talk:List of works by Clara Schumann

[On Clara Schumann's quote:] Not Exactly a ringing endorsement for her works, but after all, everyone's their own harshest critic!Mcroskell 01:52, 25 June 2007 (EDT)

I don't think so in this case. She was so influenced by the conventional thinking of her time, that she h a d to write such things and to excuse her for her compositions. And it's of course a kind of captatio benevoletiae or fishing for compliments. The biography by Nancy B. Reich and the preface to the edition of "Sämtliche Lieder" (Edition Breitkopf) bring similar citations by Clara and contemporaries. I try to translate a quote from the "Neue Zeitschrift für Musik" in 1837 by Carl Ferdinand Becker: "...here isn't to speak of a recension... because we have to do with the work of a l a d y" (hier soll von einer Recension gar nicht die Rede sein... weil wir es mit dem Werke einer D a m e zu tun haben). --Molinarius 15:46, 21 July 2011 (UTC) The quote deals with Clara Schumann's piano concerto in a op. 7, composed by a teenager. --Molinarius 15:53, 21 July 2011 (UTC)
