Talk:Symphony No.1 (Brian, Havergal)

Tempo indications

Brian would have been nowhere near the only composer to improvise in other languages but I'm not sure if he did in fact do so-- since I don't know Italian and in fact do have to ask- is "Moderato allegro mais brio molto" Italian? (the mais looks more French.) (movement 4, rehearsal 126- beginning of the last track of the 4th movement on Lenard's recording on Naxos/Marco Polo btw..., and similarly a bit before.) There are numerous examples of Brian using the French “mais” in this score, usually in the middle of a direction otherwise entirely consisting of Italian; I don’t think there’s one which combines Italian, French and English. Elsewhere in this piece he does use the Italian “ma” so it can’t have been from ignorance; carelessness probably (and the editors at Cranz weren’t inclined to editorialise).
