Rachmaninoff
See the forum for my latest take on the copyright status, after discussion with pierre chepelov. I think a fair of titles are actually free in the EU thanks to the EU's application of RoST. Carolus 03:45, 18 October 2009 (UTC)
- We need to tread lightly here, because this is a very volatile subject. Is it safe to keep Aleko as a future featured score? We must remember that Boosey will definitely notice this.-- Snailey Talk to Me Email me 03:46, 18 October 2009 (UTC)
Yes, it's fine. Aleko is being sold by Amazon worldwide. The work was first issued by Gutheil in 1892 or 1893. That's long before the sale to Edition Russe (1914) or Edition Russe's move to Berlin (ca.1920). Right now, I'm still tagging all Gutheil issues from 1919-1943 as protected in EU, including the revised version of Piano Concerto No.1. The full score wasn't issued until after his death by Muzgiz, so that doesn't hold for the EU either as he died a US citizen. The only possible case they can make for EU standing is for those works first issued by Edition Russe/Gutheil after they moved from Russia to Berlin. Carolus 04:02, 18 October 2009 (UTC)
- That makes sense. I'm only changing the Urtext tag for Canada in a few spots, like I normally do, for the Lamm date, etc. I'm also going to go check over some of the Brahms and berlioz parts to make sure that they have the proper urtext signs.-- Snailey Talk to Me Email me 04:04, 18 October 2009 (UTC)
It never ends! Great job of keeping up with the volume today, BTW. I think we had something like 140-150 items uploaded. Carolus 04:13, 18 October 2009 (UTC)
- Well, we were at 39,000 yesterday - and now we're at 39,300. So...anyways, that's why we have this many CRs. At this rate, we potentially could double our previous year's volume by new year's. Not likely, but if we work harder on the parts (ahem, Mahler (I hate mahler, and will not touch it. But it's important), ahem)...-- Snailey Talk to Me Email me 04:16, 18 October 2009 (UTC)
Re: Google Logos
I see. So I'll have to scan it myself... P.S.: Thank you for the Star! Regards from --Ralph Theo Misch 14:12, 18 October 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks for the tip! - I'll try it via PDF SPLIT AND MERGE and GIMP. --Ralph Theo Misch 14:21, 18 October 2009 (UTC)
That would be a way to do it. -- Snailey Talk to Me Email me 14:22, 18 October 2009 (UTC)
Tchaikovsky Military March
Hi Snailey. I notice you added the "TH" number to the title of the march. I can understand why, but unfortunately this causes a problem with the Amazon links further down the page. Amazon don't use the TH numbers, and so the work doesn't come up in their listings. Not that this piece is particularly well represented in the catalogues, but if the same were to happen with Romeo and Juliet, for example, then it could be a headache... — P.davydov 14:31, 18 October 2009 (UTC)
- Got it, thanks. I was wondering about that with Berlioz - we purposefully only have H numbers and no Opus numbers - is that most prudent? Why can't we do what we've done with Schubert?-- Snailey Talk to Me Email me 14:39, 18 October 2009 (UTC)
Sämtliche Werke project
Hey. Since the big Edwards reprint of vol. 21 was giving me fits, I've decided to take a different approach. My Dover reprints will allow me to get a feel for scanning scores, since I can do them directly (I need to figure out an optimal reduction protocol on an excellent copier for the Edwards reprints). I have access to the entire Sämtliche Werke and can complete it in its entirety (in theory, depends on how committed I am to the project). For now, I'm not going to re-scan anything that's here, although I'm not particularly fond of the reset titles and page numbers. So I'm going to gradually fill out the holes in opus number order. You'll see one for Op. 1 today. I think the Sämtliche Werke scores should always show up just below the Lübeck first editions on the work pages, and will work on that as well, even for those that already exist. Regarding the handwritten measure numbers, for some reason B & H included them on everything except the solo piano works and solo songs, so I added them to my scores (following their same protocol for first and second endings, i.e., the first bar of the second ending is the same measure number as the first bar of the first ending, etc.; note 87a at the bottom of p. 3--the previous bar at the end of the last line is 86a, while the next bar, which is the first of the second ending, is 86b--since the first ending only has two bars, the first measure on p. 4 is m. 88). They can be fiddled with during cleanup, or simply removed, but I thought they might be useful to some. For the most part, they should be quite clear.--Hansenkd 14:56, 22 October 2009 (UTC)
- That's great, thanks! Try not to scan anything for which we already have the score of the B and H Samtliche Werke.-- Snailey Talk to Me Email me 17:02, 22 October 2009 (UTC)
- Yeah, was planning on skipping those that are already here (although I'd love to remove the reset titles and page numbers in favor of the B&H originals), but I think I may move all B and H Sämtliche Werke scans up to just below the Lübeck first editions on all the respective work pages.--Hansenkd 18:32, 22 October 2009 (UTC)
Just make sure that it's in chronological order, as is our style.-- Snailey Talk to Me Email me 18:29, 22 October 2009 (UTC)
- Ah, OK, so Sauer editions of piano works should probably precede it...Gotcha.--Hansenkd 18:32, 22 October 2009 (UTC)
Verlag
Hey - this is all the text I think is related to the publisher:
Verlag Gitarrefreund München. Nachdruck verboten, alle Rechte vorbehaiten.
a bit below that: Berliner Musikalien Druckerei GmbH
If this helps, this is from a collection (or periodical) called "Gitarristische Vereinigung, e.V. Sitz in München" (the volume I am looking at at the monent was published in 1915). It shouldn't be public domain: it was bought before 1923, and there are no editors mentioned anywhere (as far as I can tell). Even if they were, assuming they were 30 years old at the time of editing, they would have to be over 70 for the copyright to be still active in Canada, which is not a common case, I suspect. -jujimufu 21:30, 24 October 2009 (UTC)
(I think it looks like it might be BERLIN: Verlag Gitarrefreund - as mentioned here: http://library.csun.edu/igra/vol1/curti.html , or an office in Munich of the same company) -jujimufu 21:32, 24 October 2009 (UTC)
- Yes, I get it now - so does that mean they're public domain? Can you revive the files or do I have to re-upload them? And can I continue uploading from the same volumes? -jujimufu 21:39, 24 October 2009 (UTC)
Go ahead...and take a look at KGill's talk.-- Snailey Talk to Me Email me 21:40, 24 October 2009 (UTC)

Paa Vandring, Op.15 (Sjögren, Emil)
Hi, the problem seems to appear when a file name contains more than one successive whitespaces. This also happend to me yesterday while editing. The page is then somehow broken due to a invalid file entry. As temporary solution just move the image page as Carolus proposed and replace the space. I've posted this in the forum. Composer Stubs without a death date
See my note to Juji on this. Cases like Max Schulz (b.1885) make me leary wrt Canadian status. Highly unlikely to be free in EU, 50-50 in Canada. Carolus 01:41, 28 October 2009 (UTC)
Brahms update
I uploaded a new version of the Op. 1 file that fixed the width issue (first page was wider than all the rest). Op. 2 is coming soon. It will also have the handwritten measure numbers, as will Op. 5, but beyond the piano sonatas, this won't happen. All the other piano works in the Sämtliche Werke have already been uploaded, and I don't intend to add the measure numbers to the solo songs. Speaking of the solo songs, I'm also working to complete the upload of the Peters high voice editions from Variations (and standardize the descriptions on the work pages). In addition, I'm helping Piupianissimo to finish up the low voice Peters editions by sending him scans to clean up. There's also a "middle edition" for volume 1 only (out of 4 volumes), which we will also add since some of the "middle" keys are the original ones (for example, Op. 19, No. 4 and even the Lullaby Op. 49, No. 4). With this and the addition of the scans from the Dover reprint of the song volumes from the Sämtliche Werke, the collection of Brahms song scores will end up being quite exhaustive. Eventually, we could also add the Peters editions of the duets and quartets. They don't have dates, but I'm pretty sure they are P.D. They don't show up in the Edition Peters page here, but I can give you plate numbers to verify PD status.--Hansenkd 06:07, 30 October 2009 (UTC)
- Very nice. Thanks for improving our Brahms selection even more! We are soon to have one of the best of his collections on the web, by dint of the first editions and your efforts.-- Snailey Talk to Me Email me 12:24, 30 October 2009 (UTC)
FYI, I added the reprint info to Op. 1 as well after getting your message.--Hansenkd 17:30, 1 November 2009 (UTC)
- And changed the Sämtliche Werke page. Since the standard of that page seems to be to use German titles, I changed the Variations in volume 13.--Hansenkd 17:49, 1 November 2009 (UTC)

Giocoso09
I placed the CopyVio template on his talk page, in hopes that the massive red © will get his attention. I suspect he is the composer, as it's very unusual for someone to upload a new work by a contemporary composer who is not well-known. I'll probably give him another couple of days to respond. Carolus 21:22, 31 October 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks...I was going to let you handel (;) it.-- Snailey Talk to Me Email me 21:23, 31 October 2009 (UTC)
Perla Andaluza
I'm not so sure the No.21 applies to the title, or if it's part of some sort of series issued by the publisher. No harm in leaving it this way until we find out someday. The way the title is laid out on the first page is odd, so it's hard to tell. Carolus 02:44, 2 November 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks for preempting (mind reader!). Archive! ;)-- Snailey Talk to Me Email me 02:46, 2 November 2009 (UTC)
No.42,000
I'm uploading the Eulenburg score for Bach's St. Matthew Passion, BWV 244 right now. It's around 22 MB so it will take a couple of minutes!! Carolus 04:45, 2 November 2009 (UTC)
- Oh my goodness. Thanks! Is it based on the BGA, like their BWV 232?-- Snailey Talk to Me Email me 04:46, 2 November 2009 (UTC)
Yes, it's based on BGA with some nominal editing by Arnold Schering. Carolus 04:47, 2 November 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks. We've finally passed 200 pages with parts...time to start really getting serious. Would you mind posting the nielsen, elgar, and scriabin on FTP?-- Snailey Talk to Me Email me 04:56, 2 November 2009 (UTC)
Elgar is uploading now. It should take about 20 minutes - half hour, maybe less. Violin 2 part fir Falstaff has a bad first page. More to follow this week, especially Nielsen. Carolus 06:32, 2 November 2009 (UTC)

Typesets
I'm just curious. Many of the Mutopia files you uploaded show that the typesetter is Stelios Samelis. Is that you? ClassicalComposers 23:20, 10 November 2009 (UTC)
- Nope. I love Mutopia, and he is (I think) curator of the Beethoven scores there. Horndude77 is the person to talk to about mutopia; he knows much more than me - I've only uploaded a few scores.-- Snailey Talk to Me Email me 04:30, 11 November 2009 (UTC)
3 Pieces for Piano, Op.51 (Godard, Benjamin)
Hi Perlner. Is there a way to place my recently uploaded piano piece Brésilienne elsewhere than in the arrangements because it is an original piece. Thanks.--Jean-Séb 07:19, 11 November 2009 (UTC)
Lanterne Magique, Part I, Op.50 (Godard, Benjamin)
Hi Perlner. I see that you added Mineola to the reprint mention and that the work has been classified in non PD - EU. I am not sure why. The scan is made on the reprint Dover Publications in New York, not Mineola, published in 1977. Apart from the page numbers (pp. 149-153), the reprint is an exact facsimile of the original Ditson 1906 edition that I also have (pp.115-119). Thus I do not see why it would not be PD in EU. If necessary, it would be easy to change the page numbers on my scan if that solves the problem.--Jean-Séb 07:35, 11 November 2009 (UTC)
- Mineola is the actual location (state of New York). Isidor Phillip died in 1958, not PD in EU for a while.-- Snailey Talk to Me Email me 23:55, 11 November 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks Perlner. Mineola is the actual location only since they moved. In 1977, date of the book, Dover Publications were at 180 Varick Street in NYC. Regarding Philipp, your observation is correct, although it did little to the original score (some fingering). Indeed I have somewhere the original Gruss edition that I might scan instead of this one when I find it. Regards.--Jean-Séb 07:45, 12 November 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks for the info.-- Snailey Talk to Me Email me 16:04, 12 November 2009 (UTC)
