35 minutes in one recording, 57 in another! (Exposition repeats? Or perhaps not and the revised and corrected version of 1883 also takes longer...)

Naxos recording has "Allegro con anima" for the first movement.

Very possible ( ? what an expression...) explanation - see Hofmeister's Monatsbericht (1883), p.24 ("entirely revised and corrected".) One guesses that Dux and Naxos are using different editions of the sonata...

  • The DUX recording uses the much larger 1869 version, plus its tempi are slower. Naxos recorded the 1883 version. However, they both seem to give a wrong tempo indication for the first movement. Moreover, the Naxos second movement has a coda really different both from the 1883 score and the DUX recording.
Generally speaking, the 1869 version is much longer. The major differences between this and the 1883 one are as follows
  • Mvt. I:
    • there is an introduction
    • the exposition is claimed to be repeated (no repeat sign in the 1883 version)
  • Mvt. II:
    • the 2nd variation (Quasi recitativo) has a second half
    • in the 3rd variation (Un poco più presto) its second half is repeated
    • after the repetition of the theme (Tempo I) there is another series of 3 more variations
    • the 1883 piano e molto legato section is written to replace yet another variation of the 1869 version
  • Mvt. IV:
    • the second subject has an "extra" central episode and goes on for another time after this
    • the fugue is much more elaborated and lasts much longer
    • in the repetition section both the main and the second subjects (and also the transitory episode) are longer, they last about the same time as in the exposition
    • in the Cadenza there are "extra" piano passages before the Andante, and an "extra" transitory section at the end
    • in the coda there are several "extra" bars at the very end of the piece, before the 5 final measures
