Benedict Randhartinger’s vast estate in the Vienna City Library contains 24 works for violin and piano. All of these are very short pieces; the longest (no. 12 of this edition) has not more than 112 measures. Within the composer‘s extensive oeuvre they are all but significant. Two thirds of these pieces are dated 1878, the others are from 1879, 1883, 1886 and 1890; two pieces are not dated at all. The titles Randhartinger has given them don’t show much concern for variation: No less than ten are titled „Cadenz“, seven others „Andante“; beside those there is a „Fantasie“, a „Lied“, a „Scherzo“, a „Scherzando“, a „Menuetto“ and a „Violinsolo“. Lastly, one piece bears the title „Melancholie“.
