The manuscript bears the following autograph note: 12 novembre 1880 à Alger. H. Vieuxtemps (source: Vieuxtemps' catalogue of works by Xavier Rey) The manuscript itself was written by Julie Vieuxtemps, the daughter of the composer. She was a singer and was living in Algiers in 1880, when Henri Vieuxtemps was recovering from two strokes at her husband’s sanatorium. It seems certain that Henri Vieuxtemps wrote the songs for her, even the last song is for male voice. That would also explain the use of German, since Julie Vieuxtemps grew up speaking German in Eichenhain near Frankfurt/Main.
