This choral fantasy over "Amazing grace", written for four-voice choir and organ, takes William Walker's melody, adapted from the traditional song "New Britain"—originally sung by the community in unison—and employs the figured chorale technique to treat the melody as a chorale, under or over which glosses and counterpoints are presented beyond mere homophonic doubling in thirds or sixths. The vocal combinations also vary: two, three, or four voices in diverse mixtures allow the six strophes to be heard in ever-changing versions, thus creating a complex, changing, and original harmonic world. Furthermore, every two strophes the pitch rises a half step, and throughout the hymn, the most common variants of the main melody appear. Added to this are a prelude and two organ interludes that create a clear three-part structure associated with the three tonal regions of the work: G major, A-flat major, and A major. In short, the work can be considered variations for choir and organ on a traditional theme.
