"Ascher, I." could be a misspelling for "Ascher, J[oseph]" or could be "Ascher, I[sidor]" if these aren't in fact the same person. (The capital letters I and J were rarely used as stylings in place of each other. See the examples "I.P. Pixis" for J.P. Pixis and "J Lombardi" for I Lombardi.)
