Born 27th January 1954 in Elisabethville (Lubumbashi, Congo), Paul M.M. Colinet began studying music when he was about 20 years old, after buying an old violin on a flea-market in Brussels. That very same day he met his first teacher, Mario Andreani, who saw him buy the violin, offered to teach him. A few days later Mario Andreani began to learn him solfeggio and the basics of violin. A few years later, with his second teacher, René Lemaire, an old and former pianist, he learned the basics of harmony and counterpoint. A third teacher was violin and viola player Delphine Baeyens, an older lady with a lot of experience in the field of music.
On his own Paul M.M. Colinet studied the fugue, composition, and the basic technique of different musical instruments, among them mandolin, recorder, viola, and cello. Later saxophone, clarinet and viola d'amore. Years later he joined amateur orchestras and started to play chamber music with friends. One of those friends, Sophie Jasinski, introduced him into the subtleties of viola da gamba and baryton.
Meanwhile Paul M.M. Colinet had started to compose. During many years he played the viola, mostly in amateur ensembles, although cello a few years semi-professionally. He also studied Indian music, and the Indian sarangi, with Daniel Schell and Dhruba Ghosh. Many years later, aged past 65, he started to study trumpet, althorn and horn.
