Paul Ehrenberg (1876–1949), a painter, was an excellent violinist and close friend of the novelist
Thomas Mann (1875–1955). Mann dedicated the ninth book of
Buddenbrooks (1901) his first major novel to Paul Ehrenberg. Two characters in this novel have musical talent: Gerda Buddenbrook (violin, Part 10 chapter 5) and the boy Johannes Buddenbrook (piano).
