Misc. Notes From the uploader's mother's library. This is from the New Edition of 1918. The accompaniment is not identified other than by OLD IRISH AIR.

The fact that the title is not O Danny Boy as is the case elsewhere, but just Danny Boy, should be noted, as is also the librettist's recommendation to alter the phrasing of his poem to adapt to the singer, man or woman, as the case may be.

Misc. Comments

  • Weatherly was an English lawyer who wrote the lyrics to at least 3,000 songs. For this one, he set his lyrics to the famous Londonderry Air.
  • It is frequently considered a ballad, though if the 1913 edition is the first, Weatherly himself did not use that term.
  • Though one defining feature of folk songs is that their origins are obscure, and they generally have anonymous lyricists. A few modern songs have achieved folk status, though, and Danny Boy is one of these.
