Commissioned by the Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge fund of the Library of Congress for Martha Graham. Long after the first performance, Hindemith sketched out a scenario of his own; this is reproduced in Paul Hindemith: Leben und Werk in Bild und Text (item 45), 180-81.
