Misc. Comments

  • Incidental music to the 3-Act Poetic Drama 'Le fils des Étoiles' by Josephin Péladan. Originally for orchestra but never published that way.
  • Stephen Moore Whiting, in his book Satie the bohemian: from cabaret to concert hall, mentions another work, Upsud which Satie scored for flutes and harps, but the flute parts exceed the range of the flute. He feels the reference to flutes and harps make far better sense if taken for stops on a harmonium, then says that the same could apply to Le fils des étoiles. In other words it is possible that the flutes/harps instruction was not intended as the actual instrumentation. Grove lists the instrumentation as "fls, hps/hmn".
  • The music is, for the most part, typically Satiean, with its use of Quartal Harmony (chords constructed using the interval of a fourth, rather than the traditional tertian structure), and chains of parallel triadic chords (sevenths and ninths): the effect of these harmonic structures, combined with modal melody reminiscent of plainchant, is to create a sense of Timelessness, of Immobility.
