- Nuits d'été à Pausilippe, an album consisting of ariettas, romanzas, notturnos, duettinos composed expressly for chamber performance, is rather more interesting than the general run of Donizetti's attempts at the genre. "La Conocchia" is an agreeable little Neapolitan dialect piece, tells of a woman who parades in front of a window when she wants her young man to notice her. Victor Hugo's Le Crépuscule has inspired the composer to a more impassioned melody than the Neapolitan texts have wrung from him, Il Barcajuol, its text by leopold Tarantini, has a distinguished, quasi-operatic melody, and A Mezzanotte is a lively midnight serenade in which the lover speaks of the presence of a third person namely, Love.
- It seems that some of the French texts are independent from the Italian originals.
