---
Such is the strict law of nature, that all that lives must die.
The plant shoots up and beautifully blooms, but when she has reached the measure of her flowering, she withers away and rots.
And we in all our pride, how wise we think ourselves, how great, how powerful!
Where is our greatness, where is our power, when the night approaches?
Like the plant, we also wither and perish and rot in the earth.
---
But is it right that we mourn over death?
Do we fear it like a ghost?
Do we fear mortality?
- - - -
We live and strive and bear the burden and heat of the day.
We live and rejoice. We enjoy the joy and the gaiety of the day.
But slowly the twilight falls, when we earnestly rest and remember:
The bright moments we remember with joy.
We also remember with smiling equanimity the sorrows we have endured.
However, night is ever falling, and a quiet evening peace captivates us.
- - - -
Yes, it is indeed lovely to fall asleep in the evening!
Ja, vi somna!
Vi somna!
Vi gå bort!
Men leva icke våra gärningar?
---
Yes, we sleep!
We sleep!
We pass away!
But do our deeds not live?
Do we not leave to our children the inheritance we have received, have gathered?
And are not our children flesh of our flesh?
Are they not life of our life?
They live, and we live in them!
- - - -
For you, the spring of life, you cannot perish:
eternal power,
natural power,
God....!
- - - -
So let us not grieve our mortality but live righteously and rejoice!
And having lived our day, let us then with dignified posture and smiling mouth enter the night!
