Reviewed in the September 1875 Atlantic Monthly, page 380. "Before the year 1873 had ended", "they [had] printed 1150 copies of the sonata" according to a letter of his father's printed in his son's biographical memoirs (p.442).

Performed by von Bülow December 17 1873. ("Hallé, Hans von Bülow... all came to St John's Wood to play the Sonata to the composer before they performed it.") Premiered by "Miss [A.A.] Channell" (ibid.) (described as a student of the Royal Academy of Music @ The Musical World, June 7 1873, p.380, where the date is given as "Saturday evening last"- May 31.)
