First published in 1814, this piece appeared in two versions: as No.2 of Three Nocturnes, and as No.3 of Three Romances. Thepassages occupying bars 40-48 appeared in the Romance but not the Nocturne, where it was replaced with a simple restatement of the theme. Compared to the Nocturne, the Romance had a less taut structure and the ending was not nearly so imaginative (according to Branson). David Branson's version is thus a conflation of both the Nocturne and Romance. It appeared frequently in his recitals, and he broadcast it in 1965 on BBC Radio 3.
