Extra Information | These pieces are suitable for beginning trumpet players. The "Goat Counting Song" is a setting of the traditional Welsh song "Cyfri'r Geifir." |
I wrote two of the three pieces at the request of Daniel Gianola-Norris as part of a project for a rethinking of the repertoire of Suzuki book 2 pieces in 2021. I wrote them with specific technical, length, and range standards, but the pieces I wrote (By the Stream and Alpine Journey) weren't selected for the book. Fortunately I was able to re-work them as a set of pieces for either trumpet and piano or violin and piano.
You will notice on the cover that there are goats all over the place. The "Goat Counting Song" is a melody that I learned in elementary school as a result of our teacher asking me and my classmates to bring in folk songs that are part of our various immigrant heritages. One girl brought what I thought were two Latvian songs that I loved. I was able to identify one as a popular Latvian folk song, but I had to search for a good half century for the identity of the second song. I learned (with Dan's help) that the second song was actually Welsh. I guess one of my friend’s parents came from a Latvian family and one came from a Welsh family.
