My Process for Obtaining High-Quality Monochrome Scans

Step 1: Convert Color PDF to JPG Images

I use a service called ILovePDF that has an app that can support lots of files in the merging process with lossless features. It is free with limited tasks allowed, but the premium is cheap and unlimited.

Step 2: Convert JPG Images to Monochrome TIFF

I use IrfanView to convert JPG to monochrome TIFF. In the "options" menu under "batch conversion settings", select CCITT Fax 4. In the advanced settings menu, set the DPI to 600 and use the resize function to preserve maximum quality if needed. That's all you should need for the settings.

Step 3: Improve TIFF Quality and Compression

ScanTailor Advanced is the best software for this feature. Make sure to go through every step of the process provided in the software and make sure that the content selection highlights every important feature of the score. Adjust the gamma correction as needed to make sure the score isn't too dark.

Step 4: Merge TIFF Files into One PDF

I use ILovePDF to finally convert the TIFF files into one PDF file. If applicable, always bookmark the PDF afterwards according to movement or piece with the BookmarkMov or BookmarkPiece templates. This process can be completed with Adobe Acrobat, which is what I use.
