5-string doublebass then, or something... notice the low E[{flat s starting with bar 12 of page 1 of the cello-or-bass part; if the bass part is played at an octave below normal as per, that alone would take it below the bottom of the E-string... I think me, I do!, that Kayser, too, has taken "violon et basse" (in the original publication, I think, as with opp.1 and 2, etc., and many other scores of the late 18th, &c) and taken basse to mean cello-or-contrabass. It might, I'm guessing, but it's contextual. (... then again, Beethoven, too, missed the fact that bassi lack low notes on the E string sometimes, especially during cello-and-bass section unisons...)
