Cedric Thorpe-Davie (I think) in Musical Structure and Design describes this work (paraphrasing) as something very like a chaconne/passacaglia, one of the few he knows of from this period (late Classical/early Romantic - not many in the middle Classical period either, I suppose, that I know of). - Schissel
