Extra Information | What Ludwig Nohl claims to be the basis of his first publication of the work has never been found. All we have of the piece are (1) two lines of sketches from 1808 and (2) sketches from 1810 with pencil revisions from 1822, probably, for inclusion into the set of 11 Bagatelles, Op.119. The work as we know it today is entirely based on Ludwig Nohl's first edition, which in turn is very similar to the 1810 version of the work. The manuscript upon which Nohl based his edition is inscribed "Für Elise am 27 April zur Erinnerung von L.v.Bthvn" (for which scholarship has generally agreed that 1810 is the year) and apparently given to him by a certain Babeth Bredl from the possessions of Therese von Malfatti. |
