This work was published originally under the title "Miniatures." It was composed first for piano solo presumably, then arranged for violin and piano, with that title. The orchestrated version of 6 of the numbers (10, 4, 5, 6, 8, and 12) is known as Cui's "Suite Miniature," Op. 20, which constitutes his orchestral Suite No. 1.
