Commissioned, along with Spohr's nonet and several other chamber works of the period, by Johann Tost (who offered in 1813 to pay for any chamber works Spohr would write over a certain period - see Brown (1984), Spohr: A Critical Biography, pp. 85-on.)

2nd quintet (in order of composition, and in the Op.33 set as intended by the composer), published as first due to a publisher's error.
