Max Steinitzer (1864-1936)
Leipzig: Ernst Eulenburg, 1912. Plate S. 8288a
Co-issue with Universal Edition (Philharmonia series)
This score is of the 1892 first edition of the Symphony and differs in many places from the Haas and Nowak versions usually heard in recordings. As musicologist Benjamin Korstvedt persuasively argues (in Bruckner Symphony No. 8, Cambridge Music Handbooks, Cambridge UP, 2000), the considerable number of additional tempo changes, especially in the finale, shed important light on performance practices at the time of the work's premiere. The first edition "explains how the music should go far more explicitly -- and in a musically compelling way -- than do Bruckner's manuscript scores of the 1890 and 1887 versions and the modern critical editions based on them [i.e. Haas and Nowak]."
