Arrangements and Transcriptions

Flight of the Bumblebee (Act III, Tableau 1)

This selection, known outside of the opera as «Полёт шмеля» ("Flight of the Bumblebee"), although not labeled as such in the score, ends the first tableau of the third act and constitutes by far the most well-known item from this opera. The music recurs in modified guise during the ensuing tableau of the opera (Act III, Tableau 2).

Misc. Notes:

Excerpted from the original piano-vocal score. For reference, here is an English translation of the libretto for this selection (from the Wikipedia article on the "Flight."):

(Gvidon goes down from the shore into the sea. Out from the sea flies a bumblebee, whirling around the Swan-Bird.)
SWAN-BIRD:
Well, now, my bumblebee, go on a spree,
catch up with the ship on the sea,
go down secretly,
get into a crack a little distance away.
Good luck, Gvidon, fly,
only do not stay long!
(The bumblebee flies away.)

"Полёт шмеля" = "Flight of the Bumblebee" (from Act 3, Tableau 1)

Note: Flight of the Bumblebee occurs at the end of the tableau; the Swan sings over the music. This excerpt is NOT part of the Suite (Tableaux Musicaux), Op. 57, although it is sometimes included during performances of the suite. The various arrangements listed in this publication history are the earliest ones only -- a mere fraction of those that exist now.
