Extra Information The composer writes: During the ten years that I worked for the Canadian Opera Company, I heard a lot of opera. My Five Opera Songs (1997-2008) are, in a sense, a product of my intensive exposure to the operatic repertoire. However, I chose these particular texts because they were all excerpts from operas that I did not know very well – and I carefully preserved my ignorance of the original settings until after I had composed my own. In all cases, my own settings turned out to be quite different from the originals. As the dates in the title suggest, this set of songs was written in two stages: the French, German and Italian songs were composed in 1997. The Russian and English songs were added to the set eleven years later.
