Viardot is said to have been involved alongside Osborne with Bériot's variazioni for violin, and she probably composed this aria around the same time the latter published one on the same text, intended for the famous prima donna Henriette Sontag - whom he courted before marrying Maria Malibran, Viardot's elder sister. As for the music, dilettanti are forced to acknowledge the strong recollection of the last part of the aria Deh per questo istante sung by Sesto in La Clemenza Di Tito. Viardot worshipped Mozart enough to buy the manuscript of Don Giovanni, an opera which her father (title-role), mother (as Elvira), brother (Leporello) and sister (Zerlina) had performed in New-York in 1826.
