History

Carrie Jacobs-Bond (1862–1946) overcame many hardships. She was widowed and poor at age 33, with a son to support. Although her songs were popular she could not find a publisher, so in 1896 she started her own sheet music publishing company. As a result, she owned the copyright to her work. In those days, before sound recording and radio, a successful printed song could make you rich. For example in 1910 she published "A Perfect Day", and sold 25 million copies. Her publishing company started in Chicago and later moved to Hollywood, California.
