Older brother of Paul Alday, with whom he is often confused. Their father (b.1737, first name unknown) was also a musician.
François had 4 sons who were professors of music; Auguste, Philibert, Joseph and Francisque Alday (Ferdinand was a grandson) - attributing works to members of the Alday family is difficult since the sons all went under the name of Alday fils, and full names were rarely used in publications.
Fétis lists two sons, born 1763 (L'ainé) and 1764 ( le jeune). The elder one settled in Lyon in 1785 as a publisher. The younger moved to England in 1791 and had a position in Edinburgh from 1806. He published two violin concertos and other works.
