Erdstein was born in Odessa in 1874 and was a student of Theodor Leschetizky. He was a prominent composer, concert pianist, and teacher in Europe during the early 20th century with approximately 20 published opuses until being forced to flee Vienna due to the Nazi Anschluss. He settled in New York and spent the remainder of his years teaching. Many of his compositions were destroyed after his work was outlawed by the Nazis. He is best known for his edition of Chopin's C Sharp minor Nocturne Op. Posth.
