Francesco Traversi is an Italian composer whose musical language combines the heritage of European modernism with contemporary compositional techniques and a distinctive sense of orchestral colour. His work is shaped by a dialogue between structural research, rhythmic and melodic innovation, and a pronounced lyrical dimension, informed also by his parallel studies in architecture. He studied piano and composition at the Conservatorio “L. Cherubini” in Florence and subsequently pursued advanced studies in composition, film music, jazz, electronic music and conducting. His artistic formation was enriched by encounters with leading figures of twentieth- and contemporary music, including Karlheinz Stockhausen, Iannis Xenakis and Luciano Berio, as well as by studies in film music with Ennio Morricone and Nicola Piovani at the Accademia Chigiana in Siena. Since 1999, Francesco Traversi has pursued a dual career as composer and conductor, working with orchestras and choirs in Italy and abroad. In 2001 he made his operatic debut at the 65th Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, with a commission from the Teatro Comunale di Firenze, in collaboration with the Conservatorio “L. Cherubini” and the Accademia di Belle Arti. He has distinguished himself in numerous national and international composition competitions, receiving awards such as the Global Music Award (USA), the Honourable Mention at the Maurice Ravel Composition Competition, the Guido d’Arezzo Prize, and the La Bacchetta d’Oro Prize. In 2008 he received a special commendation from Pope Benedict XVI for his Missa Solemnis Codex Amiatinus. His works have been commissioned by major institutions, including MiBAC, the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, the Festival dei Due Mondi in Spoleto, Stanford University, and the Teatro dell’Opera di Firenze. Since 2006 he has served as Artistic Director of the BolsenArte Festival and as Principal Conductor of the Ladies Italian Chamber Orchestra. Since 2017 he has also been Associate Conductor of the Europa Musica Symphony Orchestra and Guest Conductor of the Cento Città Symphony Orchestra. Parallel to his concert activity, Traversi has developed a significant body of work for film and media. After his early soundtracks for RAI, in 2013 he moved to Los Angeles, joining the staff of Ilsley Music and collaborating as orchestrator with Christopher Young on major Hollywood productions. These experiences earned him a nomination at the Hollywood Music Awards and recognition at the Global Music Awards. He has written music for films, short films, commercials and television productions, and has served as a jury member at the Florence Choral Festival as well as Commissioner for the Safeguarding of Traditional Music at the Italian Ministry of Culture. For his artistic merits he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic (Officer).
