It was founded in 1861 by the composer C.F.E. Horneman (1840–1906) in Copenhagen, Denmark.[1] However, it was managed by his father, the composer Emil Horneman (1809–1870), who was forced to sold his share of his own company Horneman & Erslev in 1859 in order to prevent bankruptcy.[2] After the death of Emil Horneman in 1870, C.F.E. Horneman took over the management of the company. In 1871 its sheet music store was closed, and the publications were given on commission to E. Wagner.[3] On 3rd September 1875, the company was sold to Wilhelm Hansen.[3] C. F. E. Horneman sold it to Wilhelm Hansen, because they offered 15,000 DKK, whereas C.C. Lose offered 10,000 DKK for the publisher.[4]
