A ciaccona is a type of musical composition that was popular in the Baroque era. It consisted of repeating the same harmonic progression an arbitrary number of times, each time using rhythmic and melodic variations but keeping the harmonic progression unchanged. The ciaccona fell into decline during the 19th century, but it has been used, somewhat sparingly, in the 20th century. The form is rigid, constrained as it is by the repeating harmonic progression, but it can be tweaked to provide dramatic contrast and a wide spectrum of sonic landscapes as I attempted to do with this composition.
