According to his diary, Nielsen composed the song on 9 December 1929. A version for piano with text was published as facsimile in Politiken. The readers of the newspaper had complained that none of the existing melodies for this poem was satisfactory. According to the newspaper, Nielsen came to the result after having finished four or five drafts.
