  • These 6 Lieder were sketched as indicated in the composer's early works list in the 1970s, but never properly completed. In those days the composer put pen to paper and that was all. Since then computer aided composition has changed the picture. In 2018 Feldmahler received notice from Petra & Ralph-Robert Lichterfeld in Germany, requesting information. Feldmahler, not knowing, passed on the request, but I retrieved it only recently (2019), as it had escaped my notice in my gmail accumulations. Petra & Ralph-Robert have set up a foundation that supports activities in remembrance of writers and composers that had been exiled, and suffered persecution (http://www.echospore.de/index_can.shtml). Their interest stimulated me in deciding to take up those early compositions in a proper form. As it turns out, this year (2020) being a remembrance year of the Holocaust, this early intention has born fruition right on time. The collective title for these 6 Lieder, which I discovered in a pedagogic booklet for high school students nearly fifty years ago that delivered poetic material in English and German in particular (Le bloc-notes, éditions Ophrys, Gap) arrested my attention and provided food for thought and musical inspiration. Because of my elementary knowledge of German, the problem of finding the right title for this set, has been arduous, several excellent suggestions were proffered, but I have decided to retain Petra & Ralph-Robert's, who base the title on a similar phraseology found in German literature.
  • Due to the non-resolved copyright contingencies attached to the original text of the no.2 Lied (Vom Brot der Sprache, by Hans Sahl), it has been replaced with Eltern bleiben, by Alfred Kerr. It is to be noted that the latter poem which was inscribed on the author's parents' gravestone is referred to as a the Friedhof-Inschrift. I have taken the liberty of entitling it differently, based on the line that is repeated thrice. I have also ended the poem a little differently, for musical reasons.
