History

This music publishing company was founded in 1926 by Henri Elkan (1897-1980), a Belgian conductor who immigrated to Philadelphia in 1920. Philadelphia Orchestra cellist Adolph Vogel (1893-1981) joined as a partner in 1928 changing the name to Elkan-Vogel. One year later, Bernhard Kohn came to the firm as an additional partner. When Elkan left the company in 1952, Vincent Persichetti (1915-1987) was made new director of publications at Elkan-Vogel. Henri Elkan started a new company in 1956 under his own name, which continued to operate in some form until the 1990s. The Theodore Presser Company acquired Elkan-Vogel in 1972 and relocated it to Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. Elkan-Vogel was very well-known as the United States agent for most French publishers starting in 1930. These agencies continued with Presser well into the 1980s and even early 1990s.
