A 4-bar excerpt from Havergal Brian’s first opera, which in 1921 was entitled ‘The Grotesques’, and was finally revised as ‘The Tigers’. The excerpt, presumably intended for brass and percussion, is given in two-stave keyboard reduction which for the first three bars matches almost exactly the final piano-vocal score of the opera. The fourth bar is entirely different, with a side-drum rhythm in a new meter. Prior to the rediscovery of the full score of ‘The Tigers’ in 1978, the section culminating in this fanfare was arranged for brass and percussion by Malcolm MacDonald.
