History

Giovanni Canti was a family music publishing business of the 19th century, from Milan. It was founded in 1836, but merged with F. Lucca in 1878 to form Lucca & Canti. Finally Lucca & Canti was bought by Ricordi in 1888.

After Giovanni Canti's death in 1858 his widow ran the business until 1861. Then Carlo Canti the founder's son was the manager from 1861 until 1876, succeeded by his sister Anna 1876-78 who sold the business to Lucca.
Giovanni Canti was Giuseppe Verdi's first publisher, in the 1830s.

Not to be confused with Giovanni Canti (1650-1715), an Italian painter
