Misc. Notes There are relatively few tonal studies for viola set in keys that are more difficult to play in tune in on the instrument. I was so happy to come upon the tenth of the 16 Fantasy Etudes by Lillian Fuchs, one of the very few etudes in the key of B major, that I gave my B major etude, “Be Happy,” the same character marking of Giochevole (lighthearted). The fourth study, in F minor, is called “Iron” because the symbol for Iron in the periodic table is Fe (number 26). E natural moving to F is one of the flavorful characteristics of F minor, and iron is found by way of mining. The fifth study uses a minor setting of the mine-referencing song “Clementine,” as its main material, and then arrives in the seven-sharped key of C-sharp major. The sixth study begins in G-sharp minor, referencing Germanium (32 on the periodic table), but it goes through so many other keys that I thought it could represent all the rare earth minerals that are also used in building electronic devices. The meaning behind the names of the first two studies should be obvious.
