The autograph of the song was found in the Therese Grob Songbook, where the work was also published for the first time. Unlike the rest of the songs in the collection, the manuscript is not in the composer's hand, and because of this the work is presumed to have been written by someone other than Schubert. Deutsch notes that the song might have been added to the collection at a later time, although Therese Grob noted in the title page that the manuscripts were compositions by Schubert. Because of this, Deutsch states that Schubert's authorship of the song must be considered at least as being possible, even if certain aspects of the song speak against it. The album identifies "Hölty" as the author of the text, although this is certainly incorrect. The author is in fact unknown.
