The euphonium part of this Duo also works well for cello. But I think it is important to note that this is a piece written with the full-bodied sound and range of the (three-valved) euphonium in mind, with the cello alternative as a pleasant afterthought. It was also a way for me to come up with a set of functional dynamics during a time when I have been isolated from other musicians (particularly wind players) because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The euphonium can fill a room with a great amount of sound. Euphonium players should take the dynamics down at least one level in order to allow for a good balance with the viola.
