Extra Information Mercury Variations is a lively and exuberant composition for piano and percussion. While it has no specific programmatic intent, the diverse facets that Mercury assumed through the ages as god of commerce, eloquence, communication, travelers, trickery, merchants, and thieves, fit the variation form well. The aggressive prelude and coda point to the other side of the coin: there is no god, just a massive rock traveling ponderously at close to 170,000 km/hour around the sun.
