Extra Information The metamorphosis is thematic and metric. Building upon a single beat with 2 notes, every measure up through the 16th measure an extra beat is added. As this occurs, the previous notes and rhythms undergo a gradual variation so that by the time the 17th measure is reached the original notes and rhythms have become completely unrecognizable. Then the music is retrograded and the beats that were added gradually drop off, finally leaving the original two notes, albeit highly varied. In essence this is a study on variation and is an etude in difficulty of performance.
