Originally composed in 1989, the composer revised the piece twice, once extensively in 1998 with further minor changes in 2002.

The score calls optionally for a young child to improvise on a toy piano at the end of the piece. If no child is available, the player of piano 2 plays a written part for the toy piano in the final pages of the score.
