Originally composed for harpsichord, this brilliant and rhythmically driven piece belongs to the French Baroque tradition. The tambourin was a popular Provençal dance, characterized by its strong, repetitive rhythm inspired by the sound of a drum.

While hopefully many guitar transcriptions of Baroque composers such as Jean-Philippe Rameau are widely available online, this is currently the only known to me classical guitar transcription of Royer’s Tambourin available on the internet.

In this arrangement, the bass lines lie beautifully on the guitar, particularly through the use of the open D–A–D strings (6th, 5th, and 4th), which create a natural resonance and make the piece surprisingly comfortable to play.

Although a few notes from the original score may be absent, this is not due to negligence, but rather a conscious artistic simplification. Certain voices, while theoretically present, do not always contribute essential musical meaning; preserving them would significantly increase technical difficulty without offering proportional musical benefit.
