The dedicatee Harriet Boas (nee Harriet Betty Sternfeld 1868-1953) was the wife of Emil L.Boas (1854-1912), a naturalized American citizen originally from Silesia, who was general manager of the Hamburg-America Steamship Company (Hamburg-Amerikanische Packetfahrt-Actien-Gesellschaft or HAPAG) in New York City from 1892 to 1912. She was involved in several women’s organizations that promoted immigrant assimilation into Anglo-American culture, for example the New York City History Club and the Society for the Preservation of Scenic and Historic Places.
