On request by Albert Jørgensen, editor of the school songbook Danmark: Sangbog for Skolen og Hjemmet (textbook, published 1923), Nielsen set to work on editing the accompanying book of melodies, which appeared in 1924. For this purpose Nielsen composed and arranged a large number of songs for two- and three-part children's choir as well as for voices in unison. The melody book contains 305 melodies, of which forty-four are by Nielsen; nineteen of these were printed for the first time in this publication.
According to FS a revised and extended edition of Melodier til Sangbogen "Danmark" was published in 1926/27. While it is true that Nielsen did prepare a number of songs intended for a revised edition around that time, Nielsen did not send his contributions to the publisher Wilhelm Hansen until 1929, and the new edition did only appear in 1940 after Nielsen’s death.
