Extra Information | Presumably based on a hymn tune by Ignaz Pleyel (1757-1831). |
Not to my knowledge - based on the main theme of the slow movement (Andante) of Pleyel's string quartet B.349 / Op.20 no.4, published ca.1788 (the theme appears on page 4 of this work, under "Cantabile" - B D A - B C A B). The same theme is used, with the same title (Pleyel's hymn), as a variations theme in works by some other composers of the late 19th century (I asked about this at imslpforums.org) :) , e.g. Pleyel's Hymn with Variations, Op.99, by Thomas Philando Ryder published 1878. - Schissel (See 6 String Quartets, B.346-351, by Ignaz Pleyel for the original.) It is of course possible that Pleyel later (or earlier?) (re)used the theme in a liturgical work- I don't know!
