Reformation Festival is inspired by Martin Luther's life and writings especially On the Freedom of a Christian and Romans 1:17 which inspired his Doctrine of Justification. Mark Petering's words (and music) reflect the universal scope of the impact of Luther's beliefs: "As a Christian I declare freedom for my earthly woes. Mankind has no power over me yet I serve humanity." The composer has donated a portion of his commission from Luther College to Bread for the World -- a Lutheran hunger-relief organization. The work is dedicated to both Luther College and Mr. Petering's German Lutheran grandfather Erich Wolfgang Bergmann who immigrated to the United States in 1923. The work was premiered Oct 31, 2017 -- exactly 500 years after Martin Luther posted his 95 Theses.
